Owning your website
Do you own your website?
On Squarespace, Wix or Weebly, your words and photos are yours, but the website itself only runs on their platform: stop paying and it goes offline, and you can't take it anywhere else. Owning it means the code, the account that shows it and the domain are all in your name.
What owning it means here
- The code is in your own GitHub account, free and private.
- Cloudflare shows it, from your own free account: $0 a year for hosting.
- The domain stays registered in your name.
- Your own editor comes with the site: change words and photos yourself.
- A full copy downloads from your editor any time, to keep as your own backup.
And nothing of mine is needed
Once your site is live, it doesn't depend on me: no server of mine, no subscription to me. You can stop working with me at any time and keep everything.
Questions people ask
What if websites with bootsy goes out of business?
Your website keeps running. It lives in your own GitHub and Cloudflare accounts, and nothing of ours is needed once it's live: no server of ours, no subscription. You can stop working with us at any time and keep everything.
Who can get into my accounts?
Only you. We never ask for your passwords: you give us access through GitHub's and Cloudflare's own permission screens, and you can take it back at any time in their settings. While we build, you can see our access to your editor and switch it off.
Why GitHub, and what if something happens to it?
GitHub (owned by Microsoft) is where more than 100 million developers keep their work; your account is free and private. Visitors never load your site from GitHub: Cloudflare shows it, so a GitHub problem doesn't take your site down. You can download a full copy of your website from your editor at any time and keep it as your own backup.
I'm not technical. Can I do this?
Yes. You follow a short checklist with pictures: make two free accounts and click to connect them. We do the rest. After launch you change things in your own editor: click a heading or a photo on your page and change it.
